Session 1: Divorce Iranian Style

It was great meeting you all today. Through this blog, we will be able to access all the seminar's required readings, as well as other articles (like the one below by Ziba Mir-Hosseini) that are not required but might be of interest to you. You will also find links to different websites that might be useful when working on your paper. And, last but not least, the blog will allow us to continue (and expand) our ICFL discussions.

If you are interested, the co-director of Divorce Iranian Style, Ziba Mir-Hosseini, wrote an interesting article titled "Negotiating the Politics of Gender in Iran: An Ethnography of a Documentary", in which she describes the process of making the film. The article can be partially read here (beginning on page 167). Mir-Hosseini's article is part of a book by Richard Tapper, titled The New Iranian Cinema: Politics, Representation and Identity.

When reading H. Patrick Glenn's “Are Legal Traditions Incommensurable?” for next week, think about whether the Canadian (or the legal system you are more familiar with) and the Iranian family law regimes are (or not) incommensurable.
